Kansas Policy Does Not Forbid Teaching Evolution

Dear Editor,
Amidst all of the science-has-been-abolished hysteria of the secular left, a number of facts stand out. To begin with, the news media is misrepresenting the situation. The Kansas policy does NOT forbid the teaching of evolution, nor does it (horror of horrors) require the teaching of special creation. The policy merely de-emphasizes the teaching of organic evolution. It's nothing more, nothing less.
Most people already understand that the dogmatic extremists in this situation are not those dreaded "Christian right fundamentalists", but the secularist fanatics such as the ACLU and the so-called People for the American Way. The general public already realizes that speculative theories about how life supposedly came from slime or apelike creatures changed into humans, bears little resemblance to the real achievements of science--such as advances in medicine. They also sense that proving that bacteria can acquire resistance to antibiotics is quite a different proposition from proving that life itself arose from lifeless chemicals, or a fish changed into a land animal. And why try to reconcile these speculative theories with God when in fact evolutionary theories specifically reject God as a causative agent in the origins of life?
However, the militant secularists are correct in their statement that this issue is less of science and more of politics. For the longest time, the secular left has dominated the halls of academia. Its members expected, and have grown accustomed to, docile submission from other members of our pluralistic society. Unfortunately for them, those days are over. No wonder
the secularists are so terrified of the prospect of their monopoly on academics being challenged. The sky is falling--for them!
Can this evolution debate ever end amiably? Yes. It will end just as soon as secularists and members of the liberal media face the fact that evolution is not a proven fact of science, and that numerous intelligent people reject evolution for legitimate reasons. And enact even-handed educational policies that reflect this fact.
