Darwinism’s Social Impact

Guests: Jerry Bergman Ph.D.

Description: Darwinism, particularly as it relates to the theory of evolution by natural selection, has had profound social implications since its introduction in the 19th century. From a Young Earth creationist perspective, it is essential to recognize that the foundational assumptions of Darwinism stand in stark contrast to the biblical account of creation as presented in Genesis.

1. **Undermining Biblical Authority**: Darwinism promotes a worldview that often dismisses the authority of Scripture. By suggesting that life evolved over millions of years through random processes, it challenges the literal interpretation of Genesis 1-2, where God created the world in six days and declared it “very good.” This undermines the foundational truth of God’s sovereignty over creation.

2. **Moral Relativism**: The social impact of Darwinism has also contributed to a shift towards moral relativism. If humans are merely the product of chance and natural processes, then the basis for absolute moral values becomes questionable. This has led to a societal trend where ethics are viewed as subjective, rather than grounded in the unchanging character of God as revealed in Scripture.

3. **Eugenics and Social Darwinism**: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Darwinian ideas were misapplied to justify eugenics and social Darwinism, which promoted the idea that certain human groups were superior to others. This has had devastating consequences, including discrimination, oppression, and even genocide. Such ideologies starkly contrast with the biblical teaching that all humans are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and are equal in worth and dignity.

4. **Impact on Education**: The acceptance of Darwinism in educational systems has led to the marginalization of creationist viewpoints. This has created an environment where students are often taught that evolution is a fact, while alternative perspectives, such as those presented by organizations like Answers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research, are dismissed. This educational bias can lead to a generation that is less aware of the biblical account of creation and its implications for understanding our purpose and identity.

5. **Hope and Redemption**: Ultimately, while Darwinism may present a bleak view of existence, the biblical narrative offers hope and redemption through Jesus Christ. The Gospel proclaims that God is actively involved in His creation and that through Christ, we can be reconciled to Him, restoring the relationship that was broken by sin. This message stands in stark contrast to the despair that can arise from a purely evolutionary worldview.
