The Lewiston Area Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the lumbering, farming and recreation history of Lewiston, Michigan. Greg and Linda Arbogast give an account of how the town started in 1891 as a lumber company with supporting businesses supplying the needs of the lumber workers. The Michelson-Hanson company began in Grayling and Gaylord then acquired land at the Lewiston area. The Lewiston museum is located in the home donated by the family of George Sachs, who owned the hardware store in Lewiston. Prior to George Sachs, the house was built by David Kneeland, who managed the lumber company. The house next door was built by David Kneeland's brother, Otis, and that was the house Doug Sharp would visit every summer as a vacation home, owned by his grandmother. Julie Giordano is the new employee of the museum and she tells of her experience diving into Lewiston history. Lewiston has an annual tradition of Timberfest in August, where they celebrate the history of the lumbering origins of the town.
